Valencia port selects Orange Spain for private 5G network
1. Contract Award & Scope
The Port Authority of Valencia (APV) awarded Orange Spain a contract worth €6.9 million (including VAT) to build and implement a private 5G network within its jurisdiction.
2. Funding & Strategic Importance
The initiative is co-financed by the European Union through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme. APV describes the project as “strategic”, providing the port system with its own secure and flexible telecom infrastructure.
3. Deployment Timeline & Geography
The network will be initially rolled out at the Port of Valencia, and the maximum period for deployment and becoming operational is set at 36 months.
4. Technical Objectives & Use-Cases
The system is designed to serve more than 25,000 devices, including vehicles, environmental sensors, drones and security cameras. It aims to reduce dependence on fixed cabling or third-party operator networks.
5. Automation, Digitalisation & Environmental Impact
By enabling drones, IoT sensors and cable-free connectivity, the port aims to optimise resource use, reduce emissions and enhance its sustainability credentials.
6. Cybersecurity & Resilience
The network will incorporate advanced cybersecurity features: dual perimeter firewall, network segmentation, support for high-resolution cameras, AI-enabled drones and critical communications for port police and incident response.
7. Advanced Services: AR & Training
APV also highlights use of augmented reality (AR) for remote maintenance tasks and advanced operator training—enabling real-time technical assistance and support.
8. Strategic Transport Corridor Mechanism
The Port of Valencia is a key node in the Mediterranean Corridor of the TEN-T, making this digital infrastructure upgrade part of a broader European transport and logistics strategy.
